Geraldine “Ger” Carriere was taught to survive before she was ever given the chance to decide who she wanted to become.

A Métis and Swampy Cree woman whose community is Cumberland House, Saskatchewan, Ger grew up moving across Western Canada, separated from family and culture, navigating foster care, racism and the lasting machinery of colonialism. Those experiences taught her how easily other people, institutions and inherited beliefs can define a life before a person is old enough to speak for themselves.

Wild to Wise is Ger’s refusal to let them have the final word.

Blending memoir with Indigenous teachings, spirituality, psychology, leadership and self-development, Ger examines how identity is inherited, performed, broken apart and consciously rebuilt. This is not a story that turns suffering into an inspirational performance. Ger writes directly about what survival cost her, the armour it created and the work of deciding which pieces no longer belong. Her voice is blunt, rhythmic, spiritually grounded and completely uninterested in making itself palatable.
